In 1952 Mercedes-Benz entered the legendary Carrera Panamericana in Mexico and came 1st and 2nd with two 300 SL Coupé’s. To pay homage to these iconic cars, the front grille on the new SL has been redesigned with a modern take on its historic predecessor. The new SL is the only vehicle in the Mercedes-Benz range to feature this shape of grille. The new SL 400 and SL 500 AMG Line both have more powerful entry engines, the SL 400 is now 367 hp, 0-62 mph in 4.9 seconds and the 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission is now standard on SL 400 and SL 500. It features nine speeds with gear ratios calibrated for the optimum blend of efficiency and responsiveness and is able to skip individual gears; multiple downshifts are possible for enhanced sportiness and offer high ride comfort.
The SL 400 and SL 500 include DYNAMIC SELECT offering a choice of five different driving modes, Eco, Comfortable, Sporty, Sport+ or Completely Individual. The fives driving modes change parameters such as the characteristics of the engine, transmission and steering. Additional "CURVE" mode is also available with Active Body Control with curve tilting function.
The SL model lines include the SL 63 AMG and the SL 65 AMG. The SL 63 is powered by an AMG 5.5 litre V8 biturbo engine delivering 585 hp and 900 Nm of torque, taking just 4.2 seconds to sprint from 0-62 mph. The SL 65 AMG has a 6.0 litre V12 biturbo engine that has been re-engineered to enhance performance, meaning it can go from 0-62 mph in 4.0 seconds flat.
The SL 63 AMG and SL 65 AMG also offer the DYNAMIC SELECT but this differs in choice of modes, Comfortable, Sport, Sport+, Completely Individual and ‘Race Mode’ (for maximum sportiness and racetrack setup of all vehicle systems).
The SL offers a taster of the thrilling power underneath a Mercedes-AMG. The striking design is clear across all model lines. With its twin-blade radiator grille in high-gloss chrome, large air intakes - also trimmed in high-gloss chrome - and AMG-specific LED daytime running lamps. The sleek side shoulder line and sharp rear-wheel arches resemble its ancestor, the SLS AMG but without the distinctive ‘V-shape’ and prominent bumper.
The Active Body Control option now includes the Curve Tilt Function. The chassis with active suspension now newly includes a curve tilting function, with this the vehicle leans inwards by up to 2.65 degrees, similar to a motorbike. This reduces the perceived lateral forces and enhances ride comfort. The Curve Tilt Function technology was first launched on the S-Class Coupé and can be adjusted via DYNAMIC SELECT, by choosing the “CURVE” mode when travelling at speeds between 10–112 mph.
The new SL has a new sports steering wheel with chromes strips at the top and bottom and grey contrast topstitching, which differs from the previous models larger 3-spoke wheel. The instrument cluster has also been refreshed with new light aluminium trim with carbon-fibre grain. The soft leather interior has a specific vertical fluting design, with an option for illuminate door sill panels in brushed steel featuring Mercedes-Benz lettering. The ambient lighting is also an option to light the footwell and comes in solar yellow and solar orange.
The SL 63 AMG and the SL 65 AMG both have sporting seats with optimised lateral support and AMG badges on the backrests. The SL 65 has AMG ‘V12’ diamond upholstery pattern and door centre panels and features a top-of-the-range Bang & Olufsen BeoSound AMG high-end surround sound system.
The LED Intelligent Light System automatically adapts to lighting and driving conditions. In addition to the striking look, LED technology features greater luminosity whilst producing less glare. Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus recognises other road users driving with their lights on, such as oncoming vehicles or vehicles moving ahead for example and automatically adjusts the headlamps to the new traffic situation.
Previously known as Active Parking Assist with PARKTRONIC, Parking Pilot is a new system that automatically guides the vehicle into parking spaces (parallel and end-on), taking over the steering from the driver. The updated COMAND Online now includes the Smartphone Integration New Active Brake Assist (previously known as Collision Prevention Assist for other models).
