Are you itching for an opportunity to take to the open road in your Mercedes-Benz? Perhaps you’re planning a road trip with the kids this half term, or a romantic getaway with your significant other? Whether holidaying in the UK or crossing over to the continent, here are a few of our favourite roads to try working into your route. Detour anyone?
Wrynose and Hardknott passes, Cumbria
The UK has some great rural roads well worth a drive. Head to the Lake District, for example, and you’ll have arguably two of the most challenging roads in England right on your doorstep. The Wrynose and Hardknott passes are complete with hairpin bends, steep descents and high peaks. Good weather is a must though and you’ll appreciate something with off-road comfort suspension, such as the GLA Sport.
A82, Loch Lomond to Loch Ness
If you and your family are on the hunt for the Loch Ness Monster this half term, be sure to venture onto the A82 on your travels. Join this varied and invigorating road at Loch Lomond and you’ll get to take in many of the great landmarks Scotland has to offer, including the highest mountain in the British Isles, Ben Nevis.
Route Napoleon, Cannes to Grenoble
Planning to take the channel tunnel on your next road trip? Then one of the best driving roads in France is Route Napoleon, so named because it traces the journey taken by Napoleon I on his march to overthrow King Louis XVIII. As scenic as it is historic, Route Napoleon offers a little bit of everything, from fast straights to tight hairpins.
The Furka Pass, Swiss Alps
Fancy a spot of skiing? The Alps are famous for their driving routes, with stunning scenery and sweeping ascents. Featured in the James Bond film Goldfinger, the Furka Pass is a road well worth taking for its on-screen notoriety as well as its nearby natural wonder. Located in the central Swiss Alps, the pass takes you a stone’s throw away from the Rhone glacier, the source of the river Rhone. Opt for a four-wheel drive with the famous Mercedes-Benz 4MATIC technology and traction will increase in slippery conditions.
Amalfi Coast, Salerno, Italy
If it’s more of a romantic retreat you’re looking for, then a well-known location for love is Italy and one of the best ways to see Europe is by car! We’d recommend longer than a week granted, but if the opportunity arises then head to the Amalfi Coast to get the heart pumping with spectacular views while cruising along the cliff face.
