MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team – Driving Performance

The MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team has been dominant again this year. Boasting double Formula One World Constructors’ and Drivers’ Championships in the last two seasons, 35 poles and 31 victories, of which 22 were one-two finishes; they have done a lot more than just win.

Lewis Hamilton moved to the Silver Arrows back in 2013, as he could see the potential in the team moving forward. Whilst it now seems obvious that any driver would want to race for the MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team, at the time it was considered a gamble, although the team had showed signs of progress during 2012 where Nico Rosberg won convincingly in China. 2013 witnessed a further three victories and the 2014 regulation changes allowed Mercedes-Benz innovative expertise to thrive.

The introduction of 1.6-litre V6 turbocharged Power Units have revolutionised Formula One, with various Energy Recovery Systems (ERS) contributing to the cars becoming more than 30% more efficient than previous generations. The Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains team in Brixworth, Northants, were prepared for the challenge ahead, delivering a Power Unit that virtually ran faultlessly from day one.

To find the last Silver Arrows World Champion prior to Hamilton (not including multiple Mercedes-Benz powered non-works team championships), you have to look to one of the most talented drivers to ever grace a race track, Juan Manuel Fangio.

The five time World Champion took consecutive titles with the Silver Arrows in 1954-1955 before Mercedes-Benz left motorsport’s top flight. But don’t assume that Formula One for Mercedes-Benz is only a marketing campaign; it is a platform for much of their R&D. The Mercedes-Benz S-Class S500 Plug-in Hybrid is making use of the knowledge gained from the race track. It deploys a powerful V6 engine coupled to a hybrid module to deliver 442 hp, creating V8-like performance and a 0-62 acceleration time of a mere 5.2 seconds. Yet despite this performance, it can achieve a fuel consumption figure of a scarcely believable 100.9 mpg, with the added bonus of being exempt from the London congestion charge.

So whether we discuss motorsport, R&D or the end product, you know with Mercedes-Benz you have a winner!
