How it works
Motability is a national charity dedicated to helping disabled people become more mobile.
The Motability Scheme enables disabled people to exchange either their Higher Rate Mobility Component of Disability Living, War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement or Personal Independence Payment (PIP) to obtain a new smart.
Since the scheme began in 1978, some 3 million cars, scooters and powered wheelchairs have been provided to help disabled people with their mobility needs.
Mercedes-Benz Retail Group
Mercedes-Benz Retail Group provides affordable Hire Purchase and Contract Hire schemes to people on Disability Living Allowance (DLA), War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement (WPMS) and Personal Independence Payment (PIP).
We can offer you the chance to own one of our incredible vehicles through the Motability scheme. With their unsurpassed safety systems and astounding practicality our cars can suit all needs, being meticulously designed for comfortable, safe and enjoyable driving.

Once you opt for one of our smart vehicles our after sales sites can keep your smart in prime condition, using only manufacturer trained technicians and genuine smart parts.
The Motability scheme benefits include:
- A brand new smart every 3 years
- Insurance, servicing and maintenance
- Full break down assistance
- Tyre and windscreen replacement
- 60,000 mileage allowance over 3 years
- Annual tax disc
- Many adaptations at no extra cost
Placing your order
When you visit the retailer to place your order you will need to provide the Motability specialist with:
- Both parts of your driving licence if you wish to drive
- Certificate of entitlement from either DWP or SPVA
- Proof of address, such as a recent utility bill
- Named drivers’ driving licences and consent for their details to be checked against the DVLA
- Details of any previous accidents and driving convictions that you or your named drivers have
As part of the ordering process, you, your nominated drivers and the retailer will need to sign a Statement of Responsibilities to confirm you understand and agree to abide by the guidelines surrounding the use of your car. This document has been developed to ensure anyone who will be driving the car understand the policies surrounding its usage and to help combat misuse of Motability cars.
Collecting your car
When you collect your car, you will be asked to ‘sign’ the agreement between yourself and Motability Operations. This has to be done at the retailer and can be completed quickly and simply with the online system, by entering your Personal Identification Number (PIN), which you will receive when your application is accepted.
Finally, if your smart has an Advance Payment*, you will need to pay this to the retailer. Your tax disc will be provided with your car and Motability Operations will hold the V5 document.
So why not follow your heart and listen to your head? They’ll both point you towards your nearest Mercedes-Benz Retail Group dealership.
*Advance Payment is not a refundable deposit, it covers the difference between the cost of your car and your allowance over the length of the agreement.
