The Mercedes-AMG C 63 saloon delivers superb handling, sports-car performance levels and C-Class practicality, making it a fine executive choice. That said, the car is an ideal upmarket family option too, particularly as it comes with a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating.
The AMG C 63 S’ four-door body ensures that entry and exit for each traveller is always straightforward, while a power-operated tailgate provides easy access to the boot. An AMG body kit gives the car its sophisticatedly muscular good looks, which are further embellished by the inclusion of AMG-specific 18-inch alloy wheels. Even when stationery, an indication of the vehicle’s power can be deduced by the presence of impressive quad exhaust pipes.
The car’s well-appointed, leather-trimmed cabin allows front-row travellers to slide into elegant, high-backed and supportive sports seats. The driver also gets to grip a reassuringly chunky and flat-bottomed steering wheel. Space in the front row is very good too, and the driver benefits from good visibility. Meanwhile, the rear compartment accommodates three adult travellers, and there are plenty of stowage cubbies dotted around the interior. The C 63 S possesses a 480-litre boot space, and a rear row of seats that fold individually. When all are flipped, luggage capacity is extended even further.
A super-saloon requires a turbocharged engine, which is why the AMG C63 S is installed with a 4.0-litre petrol unit that puts out 510bhp and 700Nm of torque. This enables the car to go from 0-60mph in less than four seconds. Nevertheless, this V8 engine still manages as much as 34.5mpg.
A COMAND infotainment system is included, with an 8.4-inch display as its focal point, displaying satellite navigation output that makes route-planning a breeze. The car is fitted with a five-speaker sound system too, complete with DAB radio, FM/AM tuner and MP3-compatible CD player. Bluetooth connectivity is also included, allowing music streaming and safe, hands-free telephony.
Among the C 63 S’ array of safety features is Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), which scans the road ahead. AEB alerts the driver to potential collisions, and applies maximum braking pressure when necessary. The cabin is equipped with seven airbags and rear-mounted ISOFIX child seat anchor points, ensuring that passengers of all ages are kept as secure as possible.
