If you’re looking for an upscale and compact family car, the Mercedes GLA-Class is certainly worth considering. Boasting rugged good looks, this low-slung SUV possesses a comfortable cabin and comes equipped with plenty of useful features as standard.
The GLA sports a practical five-door body, and is crowned with high-gloss black roof rails that provide the opportunity to transport extra, outsized items, such as bicycles. The vehicle rides on eye-catching 17-inch alloy wheels as standard too, while body-coloured fixtures such as door mirrors ensure that your paint finish of choice is subtly enhanced. Furthermore, a number of chrome embellishments feature, on the vehicle’s beltline and radiator grille, for example.
An ersatz-leather-upholstered cabin provides comfortable, supportive seats – and plenty of head and legroom for front-row travellers. The rear compartment, meanwhile, provides the option to convey two adult occupants, or three younger family members. The driver benefits from plenty of adjustability options, allowing him or her to find their ideal position. There are numerous cubby spaces positioned throughout, including voluminous door bins and a generously proportioned glovebox. A 481-litre boot space should be adequate for most day-to-day activities, but if more room is required, simply flip the car’s 60/40 split-folding rear seats to unleash 1,235 litres of cargo capacity.
Entry-level SE trim lines are powered by a 1.6-litre 156bhp petrol engine, which delivers 250Nm of torque and 0-60mph in over eight seconds. This four-cylinder unit also manages up to 48.7mpg, and produces a 134g/km CO2 emission figure. Optimal fuel-efficiency is provided by models fitted with a 2.1-litre 136bhp diesel engine, which returns as much as 67.3mpg, while producing emissions as low as 108g/km. Peak performance is delivered by 4Matic trims, which are propelled by a 2.0-litre petrol engine that puts out 381bhp and 475Nm of torque – and achieves 0-60mph in roughly 4.2 seconds.
A minimum-size seven-inch infotainment system is provided as standard with entry-level iterations of the GLA. All models come with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay too, allowing you to mirror your smartphone via the car’s display screen. A six-speaker sound system also features, providing a range of music and speech-based content.
The GLA-Class has been awarded a full-five stars in extensive crash tests conducted by Euro NCAP. The vehicle is equipped with a wide range of safety features, such as Electronic Stability Control, Anti-lock Braking System and Cruise Control. The latter allows the driver to set a safe maximum speed ahead of each journey. A reversing camera features too, as does Active Park Assist, which automatically sizes up a potential parking space, taking all the guesswork out of the situation.
